About

The IRUBNY Community Arts Initiative is inspired by the artwork of Carol Caputo, New York artist. An urban romantic, Carol’s imagination and passion for the city is the driving force behind IRUBNY. “If you love New York, you’ll rub New York.”, her mantra.

Since 2006, IRUBNY project encouraged thousands of people to take part in the creative new tactile way to experience the city. With paper and crayon in hand people engaged in rubbing the streets and buildings in their neighborhood –discovering the many surface interests specific to the New York landscape. But more importantly, IRUBNY makes people aware of their surroundings and cultural history that is a part of the urban landscape.

In a series of on -site events held in school, community centers, businesses, street fairs and museums, people joined together to celebrate the community spirit. IRUBNY produced over 5,000 beautiful artworks from every zip code in Manhattan. Now anyone from anyplace in the world can add their rubbing to the IRUBNY initiative.
